A Focus on Mosses and Ferns

Sunday 18th February 2:00 pm

In the cool, and usually damp, conditions of late winter overlooked greenery comes into its own, particularly the lowly mosses and wintergreen species of ferns. Furthermore, many mosses and their close cousins the liverworts, tend to produce their spore capsules in late winter and early spring, thus becoming more attractive and easier to identify at those times. We will observe mosses and ferns on the ground, on graves and on trees and identify some of the more visible and easily recognised species. By mid-February we will hope to see some very early flowers such as crocuses, snowdrops, squills and winter heliotrope too. I would recommend that you bring a hand lens or small binoculars to this walk.
