King Edward VI’s School Artwork

On Saturday 4 July, King Edward VI School finally exhibited the artwork that had originally been planned for display on 10 May, marking the 180th anniversary of the opening of Southampton Old Cemetery.

The exhibition features six pieces of artwork by Year 9 students, created using a technique called intaglio. In intaglio, an image is incised or carved into a flat surface, known as a matrix or plate. Ink is applied into the recessed lines, the surface of the plate is wiped clean, and pressure from a roller press transfers the trapped ink onto damp paper.

The research and artwork are included in a book titled Southampton Old Cemetery: A Celebration of 180 Years. The book was also produced by King Edward VI School, which has kindly donated serval copies to FoSOC.

The winner of the artwork category was Ellis O. for artwork on Lt-Colonel Hewett, and the winner of the research category was Noah L. for work on Edwin Moon. Each winner received a voucher from FoSOC.

The six artworks will be on show until early September 2026.
