Learn about Coniferous Trees

Saturday 11th November 10:30 am

Southampton Old Cemetery has a rich assortment of conifers, and these provide welcome shelter for wildlife in the winter, an abundant food source for certain birds and insects as well as being so aesthetically pleasing. The oldest ones were planted back in the mid-19th Century and include species from all over the world, from the American Wellingtonia, Nootka Cypress and Lawson’s Cypress; the South American Monkey-puzzle (Chile Pine) and the Sawara Cypress, Japanese Red Cedar, and the rare Hiba (Thujopsis dolabrata) from the Far East. We also have the traditional native Yew, including the Irish Yew variety. Learn more about these fascinating trees, including how to identify them.
