Hopefully, the weather will be cooler, but not dull and wet, for another exploration of the insects and spiders in the rich variety of habitats at Southampton Old Cemetery. The butterfly transect season will be drawing to a close, but we hope to see the likes of speckled wood, small copper, red admiral, common blue, and comma still on the wing and maybe joined by some migrant moths. We will hunt down the more hidden creatures in the ground, grassland and on the trees and will also be looking out for leaf mines and galls. We will not be ignoring other wildlife like birds, fungi (depending on rainfall), and late flowers – this is the time that devil’s-bit scabious (a good nectar source) is in bloom and the ivy, goldenrods and autumn stonecrop may be coming out.
