Sad lost of Alan G K Leonard

Saturday 24th August 2019

FoSOC Vice President Alan Gordon Keith Leonard (1922- 2019) sadly died on 26th July aged 96 years old. Alan G K Leonard M.A. was born and brought up in Kent, he left his native county to study for an Honours degree in Modern History at Oxford University and to undertake war service with the Army (in France / Germany etc., during WW11.).
Married and living in London, he worked initially as a teacher and then with a Fleet Street news agency before entering local government educational administration. Following appointments at Plymouth and on Tyneside, he came to Southampton in 1957.
A succession of posts with the Education Committee enabled him to remain here and become identified with the city and its history. He has written numerous articles and at least 17 books on local history subjects, including two “Stories of Southampton Streets” and three volumes in the “Images of England” series (The History Press), drawing on his collection of old picture postcards. He was an expert on many postcards by F.G. O Stuart, known for Tudor House postcards. He has also compiled histories of several local businesses e.g. Misselbrook & Weston. Alan was a source of knowledge to the groups he was associated with and for his advice on many subjects.
Alan’s funeral was held on the 19th August, a private family affair but both the Chairman and Secetray of FoSOC were able to attend, on behalf of the many groups he was associated with, to show their respects to Alan who was very well respected both within the groups and in the Southampton area.
