The Titanic Window at St Mary's Church
Sunday 27th May 2018
This morning FoSOC members attended the dedication of the ‘Titanic Memorial Window’ at St. Mary’s Church.
One hundred years after the disaster, (April 1912), Team Rector Julian Davies launched an appeal to install a stained-glass window in the church in commemoration of the Titanic crew, of which over 500 came from the Southampton area. This was supported by many of the Mayors of Southampton.
In June 2017 the monetary target was finally reached.
The Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass, who adopted the window as the subject for the Stevens Competition, with the winning entrant won by Louise Hemming. Her design has the quotation from the Song off Songs ‘Many Waters Cannot Quench Love’ together with the emblem of the White Star Line – the Titanic’s owner. The blue orbs represent each member of the crew who perished.
This service was led by The Right Reverend Tim Daykin, Bishop of Winchester, the service started at 10.30 am ad finished at 12.45, with a buffet reception afterwards within the church.
