The Newly Restored Newman Family Grave

Tuesday 5th April 2016

Over the last few weeks Gavin, Adam and Josh of ‘Allstone Stonemasons’ have been painstakingly restoring the Newman family grave to it's former glory and today completed their task. The transformation as you will see is truly astonishing and completed well in time for our upcoming Titanic walks this weekend and FoSOC are absolutely delighted. One of the family members buried here is Miss E Maude Newman who was the Lady Visitor for the committee of The Titanic Relief Fund which had been set up to help the families of the crew members who had lost their lives when the ill-fated Titanic foundered on 15th April 1912. For nearly 30 years she used to cycle around the town visiting families to assess their needs and is a grave that we regularly visit during our walks. Apparently Maude was also very fond of Bluebells that are very prolific in this area of the Cemetery and so Val, our Secretary chose the colour of the chippings to complement them. How magnificent the grave now looks and we feel sure that Maude and all her family would be so pleased and proud to be remembered. 'Life's work well done'.
