The Yates Grave

Saturday 2nd April 2016

Recently FoSOC were contacted by Chris Linney and the following is a very moving story told in his own words: "I have been researching my Yates Family Tree for a few years now and I discovered my Grandmother had an older brother born in 1901 who had sadly died aged only 4 weeks and she also had a younger sister born in 1903 who had also died aged only 3 years 8 months in 1907. Both children died of Meningitis. Fortunately for me my Grandmother, Gladys Amelia Yates (born 1902), didn’t contract this awful disease and lived until 91 years. I have traced the Yates family tree back to the birth of my Great, Great Grandfather Henry Yates in Coventry in 1857. He married Mary Blake in 1877 and they raised 11 children in St Denys, Southampton. Their eldest child Frederick Henry Yates (my Great Grandfather) married Elizabeth Small in 1901. They were the parents of the children mentioned above who sadly died and my Grandmother, Gladys Amelia Yates. Having found this information on I decided the next step was to try to find the final resting places of the two young children. I was advised to contact FoSOC and fortunately for me spoke to Bruce who was so helpful in assisting me in pinpointing exactly where the two graves were situated. The site was very overgrown with brambles, so armed with a hedge trimmer and other gardening equipment I spent Sunday morning hacking down the overgrowth and was so pleased to find two small shield like grave stones engraved with the children’s names. It is immensely satisfying to know that over 100 years after their deaths their graves have been located and can now be tended by their ancestors. The picture shows my grandmother on the left and her younger sister Gwendoline on the right. My grandmother is buried in Hollybrook but Gwendoline is one of the children we found interred in the Old Cemetery together with her older brother, George Frederick Yates. The photograph was taken circa 1905/6?" Chris Linney. Fareham.
